Learners in vocational education make rich experiences but there is often no time to reflect while in the middle of a work process. Capturing experiences through different media (photos, text, audio, video) supports reflection-on-action at a later time and building professional portfolios.
Learners in vocational education gain experiences in different contexts, such as school and workplace. Different learning contexts offer different forms of knowledge but require integration across context and devices boundaries. REALTO offers innovative tools to connect experiences from different contexts.
Reflection is important to develop adaptive expertise and practice lifelong learning. However, reflection usually does not happen spontaneously. REALTO supports systematic reflection through prompts and sharing experiences with other stakeholders.
Vocational education includes many stakeholders, from learners to teachers and supervisors. REALTO serves as a shared platform through which all stakeholders can communicate and share documents.
Work environments are undergoing radical social and technological changes. There is an increasing demand from employers for workers with more integrated knowledge that allows them to understand the whole labor process and to deal with new and unpredictable situations.
Vocational education and training (VET) systems are challenged to prepare apprentices not only to excel at routine work but also to be able to adapt to complex changing work environments. The development of such adaptive expertise requires lifelong learning and the integration of theoretical and practical knowledge. Reflection is an important element for the development of adaptive expertise. However, reflection does often not take place spontaneously but requires support.
REALTO is a next-generation online platform for VET that supports reflecting on experiences made in the workplace and at school. REALTO creates a shared digital space that connects locations (school, workplace, and inter-company courses), kinds of knowledge (practical and theoretical knowledge), and stakeholders (apprentices, teachers, and supervisors). REALTO facilitates capturing experiences at the workplace through guided learning documentations.
REALTO can be accessed through a smartphone or desktop application, which allows recording, processing, and sharing experiences through different media (photos, audio, video, drawings, or text).
Teachers can use these media to illustrate abstract concepts with practical examples. Prompts facilitate reflective activities that integrate different experiences towards the development of adaptive expertise. In the future, REALTO will be made available to all professions.
